Teaching Thinking Skills In Schools

Are we teaching thinking skills in Schools?

Before answering the above question, let first think what is being taught in schools. During Primary and Secondary education, importance is given mostly to Arts and Science. Science is given more importance compared to arts during K11 and K12 class. Because of this, many students think that thinking is not important in life. Gut feeling is sufficient to handle all matters in life. Thinking is confusing and is only for intelligent and smart people like scientists. They find all problems are difficult to solve and solving problems are boring. The negative attitude about thinking of students shows that they have no confidence in their thinking and have never been taught to think in the right direction. Many people use their thinking just to prove that those who disagree are wrong.

If we look at, during school education..how our capabilities of the brain are utilized, we have to conclude that it uses the memory capability and capacity of the brain and not using the processing capability of the brain.

The purpose of school education had always been focused on adding more knowledge, but unfortunately, it misses to teach students the skills required to use the knowledge. By teaching critical thinking skills, creative thinking skills and emotional thinking skills in schools, students are equipped to solve problems in future which are yet to be solved.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr clearly quotes that “Intelligence Plus Character - Should be the true goal of education system.”

Educationalist such as Sir Ken Robinson (an international advisor to many government organizations and non-profits educational organizations for education) have already started introducing thinking as part of school curriculum in many countries.
