One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes

I have always loved the animation movies. The best memories of my childhood have been watching the movies with my older brother. We have more or less continued that tradition. I don’t think I will ever tire of watching the animation movies because of the moral it imparts. Last evening I spent time watching the animation movie ‘The little Prince’. The way the movie begins is itself intriguing. It starts with a sketch which appears to be a hat but with imagination it is a boa constrictor with the elephant in its tummy.

The story centers around the fact there is always more than what meet the eyes. There are other topics that it touches about humanity depicted through the travel to different planets. The little prince thinks about exploring other planets, the rose he nurtured claims that it does not need him. Hence the little prince sets about exploring the planets. The little prince during his time on earth comes across a fox. While Fox is always considered cunning but all that it seeks is companionship. Then he came across a garden of roses and was sad to learn that his rose was not special since he believed that his rose was unique. The Fox then reminds him that his rose is special since he nurtured and loved the flower. Then reminds him that: “One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.”

Another major point which is highlighted in the movie is that humans are so focused on winning the rat race that they miss the most important things in life: love, joy, imagination. This is very nicely depicted in the movie through the relationship between the daughter and the mother. The mother has laid out a well-planned life for her daughter whose objective is to follow the plans. This was until the girl stumbles across the neighbor who is more enthusiastic about life and its wonders. The colorful garden and the story of little Prince evokes curiosity and brings about joy to the little girl in the company of the old aviator.

We often forget to enjoy our lives since we are rushing after things, one followed by next. Never truly enjoying the moment. Always looking for the next thing which might bring in the everlasting joy that one seeks. We often forget the simple pleasures of life, like watching the sky and the stars. Look beyond the surface, imagine, take time off for yourself and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

I was surprised to learn the book on which this movie was made was published in 1943. It is Antoine de Saint-Exupéry most famous work. More than a half-century has passed, but this book still holds relevance. It makes me worried that after these many years, the way we look at life has not changed.
