Are memories permanent?

Hermann Ebbinghaus (1993) was one of the first researchers to study about forgetting. He created several lists of nonsense syllables which are meaningless but pronounceable such as WOL and PEX. He memorized a list, waited for a specific amount of time, and then tried to retrieve the list, graphing his results each time. The result has become a famous graph called the curve of forgetting.

Forgetting Curve

This graph clearly shows that forgetting happens quickly within the first hour after learning the lists and then falls gradually. In other words, forgetting is very high soon after learning. Although meaningful information is forgotten much more slowly and much less completely, the pattern obtained when testing for forgetting is similar. Forgetting can be due to several reasons; Some of them are

1.Encoding Failure: There are several reasons why people forget things. One of the simplest is that some things never get encoded in the first place.

2.Memory Decay: Some physical change in the brain during the learning process happens in a neuron or the connectivity between neurons. Over time, if these connections are not used, they may decay, fading into nothing.

3.Interference: A possible explanation of long term memory forgetting is because of the interference of other information while retrieving the information from the memory (Anderson and Neely 1995).

Proactive Interference: the tendency of older or previously learned information to interfere with the retrieval of newer, more recently learned material.

Retroactive Interference: The interference of newer information with the retrieval of older information.

Memory and the Brain: The physical change that takes place in the brain when a memory is formed is called the anagram. Specific areas of the brain are involved in the anagram formation, and these brain areas are different for different types of memory. The changes that take place as an anagram forms are called consolidation. Although people may learn quickly, the memory of what has been learned takes some time to form completely.

Memory Failure

Also called as organic amnesia. They are two types of memory failures

Retrograde Amnesia: The individual is unable to recall the past events that occurred before the development of amnesia. This kind of memory loss occurs when consolidation process, which was busy making changes to the neurons in the brain, gets disrupted and loses everything that was not already nearly finished.

Anterograde Amnesia: Anterograde amnesia is an inability to create new connections or new neurons after the event that caused the amnesia. This may lead to a partial or complete inability to recall the recent past, while long-term memories from before the event remain intact. People with this kind of amnesia have difficulty remembering anything new and is often seen in people with severe forgetfulness, mental confusion, and mood swings.

Infantile Amnesia: During childhood, all the activities and events are stored in the implicit memories which makes it difficult to get it to conscious.
