Many people complain to God that they did not get many things in life, but they do not think that they should thank God for whatever they have got. Theodore Roosevelt says that comparison is the thief of joy.

The biggest mistake of human beings is comparing them with people above their status and crib about the qualities which they lag. It burns the inner emotion named jealousy and hatred begin the quarrel with those people. Instead if they compare themselves to people who are below their status, they will be contented and thankful for the better qualities they possess.
Don’t crib that you do not have a shoe; many people do not have a foot. If you cannot be happy with what you have, you will not be satisfied when you get what you want. The reason for sadness is dissatisfaction. The reason for dissatisfaction is desire. This is why Gautama Buddha says that root of all evil is desire. Desire stems from the comparison. So keep reminding yourself that comparison is the thief of joy.
More the money you have, more you spend, More you spend, more your worries are. People become sad not because they lack money but because they don’t know how to spend money. The moment money reaches the hand; people attach wings to it. It flies away. They don’t even think about tomorrow and spend everything they have to buy useless things.
Aesop Story on comparison is the thief of joy
There is an Aesop story which says about this unhappy quote about comparison is the thief of joy. In that story, one person was counting stars in the sky but forgot to notice the pot-hole in front of him and got severely hurt. Many people live their life doing fancy things and remember what they should be focussing on. What is the point in going at high speed if your direction is wrong?
These people are capable of identifying objects at a larger distance but could not see what is close to them. They have a farsight problem in their life. Another common analogy people make to compare humans with animals and say that they all live happily. Unless you are an animal how can they comment on lives of animals. These people have a tendency to compare themselves with other people and feel jealousy and hatred about them. A mind which is full of hatred leads to misery.
