Explanation for Quotation:

The physical growth, intellectual growth and social growth depends on heredity and nurturing. Heredity refers to the influence of inherited characteristics on the personality of a person and nurturing refers to the environment which the person experiences such as parenting styles, physical conditions, and social surroundings.

The question before us is that Sachin Tendulkar becomes world champion in the world of cricket, is it because of his heredity or environment? The answer is both. Many psychologists agree that complex behaviors have some genetic influence which makes people likely to develop in a particular way. However, our actual development also depends on what we experience in our environment (Gottlieb, 2004). The influence of environment ranges from family dynamics, neighborhood, friends, parenting and schooling. The social and physical surrounding in which a person lives is called the environment. The environment includes school, family, friends and community within which a person lives and interacts.

By studying identical twins and fraternal twins, the influence of nature or heredity can be understood. Identical twins have more similarity in intelligence than fraternal twins even when they are separated after birth and grown up in a different place. Recent studies conducted by Thompson (2001) revealed that the amount of gray matter is more correlated in identical twins than fraternal twins.

Another way to study the influence of nature or nurture in children is by determining whether the behavior of adopted children is more like that of their biological parents or their adopted parents. Scarr and Weinberg conducted research on this around 1983 and found that education levels of biological parents were able to predict the IQ levels of the children better than the adopted parents. It was evident that there was a stronger link between the biological parents and their children, it can be concluded that heredity plays an important role in intelligence.
