If you love something, set it free Quote Meaning:

You cannot convince someone to love you. The moment you want to keep someone desperately near you by restricting their freedom,  they will be driven away from you when they notice that your focus changes from well-being of theirs to well-being of yours alone.

If you love something, set it free. If it comes back, it was, and always will be yours. If it never returns, it was never yours, to begin with.

Author: Kahlil Gibran

The author of the quote is not clear. Variations of this quote are attributed to Richard Bach, Kahlil Gibran, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Jess Lair.

Variations:

If you love something, let it go. If it returns, it’s yours; if it doesn’t, it wasn’t.

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they’re yours; if they don’t, they were.

If you want something very, very badly, let it go free.  If it comes back to you, it’s yours forever.  If it doesn’t, it was never yours, to begin with.

I mean, if you love something very much, you’ve got to go easy with it—give it some room to move around. If you try to hold it tight like that, it’ll always try to get away.

If you love someone, let them go. If they truly love you, they will return. And if they do not it was not meant to be.

More Explanation for Setting Free Quote

From a practical standpoint, it makes sense not to waste all our time on energy on someone who will move away later. It is better to give this test, in the beginning, to figure out whether the relationship will work out or not.

If you love somebody, and they are fighting with something and need space or time to think. You allow them to have it. You don’t try to hold onto to someone who thinks they need to leave for whatever reason. You allow them space,  if they love you, they will return after solving their problem. One of the main problems with this method is that sometimes distance teach them to live without you instead of increasing the love.

You shouldn’t let go, someone, whom you think you cannot live without, under the pretense that someday, fate will bring back. When you want to let, something goes, think about it and decide whether you want it to let go forever.

Don’t play games with people and secretly wish it to come back. Don’t do this rejection test with people whom your love and expect them to return. They may never return as time and distance also teach them to live without you.

If you love someone, nurture and motivate them to grow and grow along with the person you love. If you really love someone you will not blackmail instead you allow them to let go freely. If they love you back, then they will live with you. Otherwise, they will look out for whatever they want in life. If you try to catch a butterfly, it will run all over the place. Instead, if you meditate calmly, the butterfly will come and sit on your shoulder.
