One of the important factor in determining the success of a person is motivation. Motivation levels of individuals vary based on the self-esteem. Many scientific experiments have proved that low self-esteem leads to failure. Let’s begin by first understanding what self-esteem means before getting into issues of low self-esteem.
What is Self-Esteem
Self-esteem refers to one’s attitude about oneself. Self-esteem is our evaluation about ourselves. It can be either positive or negative. People with high self-esteem perceive themselves as good, competent and worthy; while those with a low self-esteem see themselves as unworthy, incompetent, etc.
How is Self-esteem formed?
Self-concept is mostly determined by significant others opinion about us such as parents, teachers, friends, etc. Their views contribute large extent the way we see ourselves. Self-evaluations are also affected by the characteristics of others with whom we compare ourselves. Therefore, comparison with those who are worse than ourselves tends to make us feel better about ourselves. If we compare us with someone leading a better life than us, it makes us feel worse about ourselves causing a low self-esteem.
Childhood experiences influence the self-esteem. In fact, self-esteem starts forming during the childhood period. So parental evaluation of the child is of paramount significance in the formation of the self-esteem. Negative childhood experiences such as chronic illness, death, the divorce of parents, traumatic events have a strong effect in the way self-esteem develops. Early experiences have long-lasting effects on self-esteem as compared to later life experiences.
Low self-esteem affects feelings and behavior negatively. It could lead to personal unhappiness and also interpersonal difficulties. Poor social skills could lead to loneliness and eventually to depression. Depression could further result in a tendency to devalue oneself.
Depression is not only the result of self-esteem but could also arise from variable self-esteem. It means minor changes in life experiences can swing our self-esteem levels considerably. It occurs because self-worth is not based on stable sources.
High self-esteem does act as a buffer against negative and threatening experiences. It is a form of protection for the ego state of the individual. People who have high self-esteem are self-motivators, and it is hard to beat them in performance. It is also tough to make them feel worse. They are very confident in taking any decisions and take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
Self-monitoring refers to the degree to which individuals regulate their behavior either on the basis by the demands of the external situation or regarding their beliefs, attitudes, and orientations. High self-monitoring people perhaps engage in skillful role playing as required by the situation. Politicians, actors, salespersons, etc. are all seen as displaying such capacities.
Self-monitoring can also be viewed as the result of an internal script that people have regarding what constitutes appropriate behavior in a given situation. For example, many people are friendly and easygoing with peers, but more reserved and quiet in front of seniors/elders. According to Schwalbe 1991, there are two types of self-monitors- one guided by the audiences present, and the other by what is suitable for a particular situation, regardless of who is present. Individuals who fall in between these two extremes were found to be better adjusted.
Self-focus refers to the centrality of a person’s sense of self. It has significance in the behavior, thoughts, and feelings of oneself. Self-focussing results in better self-insight. It leads to more attempts to reduce the discrepancies between actual behavior and the self-concept. Self-focussing could also help in behavior that is consistent across situations. It is important that self-focusing is not misunderstood with selfishness.
Self can be represented in different domains such as profession, family, friends, hobbies, health, finances, etc. It is likely that some areas are positive, and some areas are negative. In the event of any stress, a compartmentalized concept of the self is capable of weathering the harmful effects of the stress better. The positive effects of the self can be utilized to manage and overcome the stress effects.
